The History of Montague Elementary School

By Beverly Cross

Montague Elementary School is a small little gem of the Shasta Valley in northern California’s Siskiyou County.  Although housed in several different school buildings, the school has maintained its quiet country atmosphere for the past 123 years.

In 1998 I had the privilege of interviewing several Montague School alumni and getting first hand information about how precious our little school has been. One person I interviewed was a lady named Marcetta (Jones) Campbell. She was known to her school friends as Katie Jones. She had been a lifelong resident of Montague, having lived across the street from the school which she attended in the late 1920’s and 30’s. Although she passed away in 2010, her recollections of the early elementary school days live on.

Another person from the same era as Marcetta, that I was lucky enough to interview, was Vera Clement, known to her schoolmates as Vera Dexter. She is also a lifelong resident of Montague, CA and lives not too far from the present location of the school.  Vera’s daughter, Carolyn Houghton, herself a former student, is currently on staff at the same school she attended as a child.

There were several others that I interviewed and, in the end, I came away with the sense that Montague Elementary School is, indeed, a precious little school with a rich history. It is as one person said, "The best little secret jewel of Siskiyou County."
